A Girl Named Sue, a new play written by Christine Hoang with songs by award-winning singer/songwriter BettySoo, world premiered in Austin, Texas from February 23, 2017 – March 12, 2017 at Trinity Street Theatre. A Girl Named Sue is a story of love and identity told through theatre, music, and poetry. This play centers on fictional Vietnamese-American college student Sue Nguyen. Through Sue’s interactions with the characters in the play, we explore relationships between Asian and Black communities in America, friendship and strain between men and women of color, ties between immigrant Americans and first-generation Americans, and love between parent and child. A Girl Named Sue was the FIRST bilingual play in Austin, Texas to feature both Vietnamese and English-speaking characters on stage. In June 2017, the Austin Critics Table awarded A Girl Named Sue playwright Christine Hoang with the David Mark Cohen award for Best New Play.
